On February 12th, the official Omega Countdown Clock began ticking off the seconds, marking the final year until the start of the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010. On hand at the ceremony to address the enthusiastic spectators was Omega President Stephen Urquhart and Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek Jr., as well as International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge and John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC). Mr. Rogge praised Swiss watchmaker Omega’s distinguished role in the advancement of sports timekeeping, calling the company “a source of enormous confidence for the IOC and the organizers of the Olympic Games.” The IOC President also addressed the beauty of British Columbia and Vancouver, as well as the generosity and welcoming spirit of its citizens. VANOC Chief Executive John Furlong graciously accepted a special commemorative facsimile of the Olympic bell from Nick Hayek, Jr. Afterward, both men took a few moments to address the assembled onlookers, expressing their assurance in the excellence of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Swiss watchmaker Omega has been the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932, introducing many technologies which have revolutionized precision timing and changed the face of athletic competition. To commemorate its partnership with the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Omega has announced a special edition Seamaster watch–the Seamaster Diver Vancouver 2010.Shop By Omega CollectionRelated articles in Omega newsBond Girl Caterina Murino And Omega In JakartaOmega New Men’s Seamaster Aqua Terra Collection

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph watch is an exquisite example of haute de gamme watchmaking. Audemars Piguet has taken the celebrated form of the Royal Oak watch and enriched it with the most celebrated complication in all of watchmaking. The tourbillon, invented at the turn of the 19th century, represented an ingenious triumph over the negative effects of gravity upon the escapement of pocket watches. At the same time, virtually overnight, the tourbillon came to represent a pinnacle of horlogical technique that only an accomplished handful of watchmakers were capable of realizing. Of course, the house of Audemars Piguet, in its rich 125-year plus history, has made elite complications such as the tourbillon an integral part of their repertoire, producing some of the most beautiful ever made. <BR><BR>The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph watch is animated by a manually wound movement whose balance wheel beats at a pace of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The tourbillon completes a single rotation each hour, as its cage bears the balance wheel, and the components of the escapement. The chronograph mechanism, enriched with a 30-minutes counter, is fully integrated into the movement architecture (as opposed to being modular) and is controlled by the traditional means of a column wheel; this method is de rigeur on the finest chronograph watches, and ensures that the action of the chronograph mechanism is of the utmost smoothness and precision. <BR><br>Each component inside the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph watch has been painstakingly refined by hand. The plates and bridges of the movement are decorated with hand-applied perlage and Cotes de Geneve patterns, and the steel levers of the chronograph and the edges of the bridges display chamfered edges. The settings for jewels and screws are fully beveled and polished, as are the screws, which are each individually polished, both on their top and sides. The steel tourbillon bridge, visible from the dial side, is painstakingly chamfered so that no sharp edge remains, and a fine polish applied. Audemars Piguet is offering this exceptional Royal Oak watch in a range of variations in 18K gold (yellow, pink, or white), platinum, or stainless steel. The case and bracelet of this timepiece shares a heritage with all Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch models. The surface of the watch displays many dozens of hand-finished facets, and an immensely rich contrast between satin brushed and polished surfaces. The characteristic porthole bezel with its eight sides frames an intricate dial that shows off a “Grande Tapisserie” pattern; around the bezel are the characteristic white gold hexagonal screws, whose slots align to form a circle. Due to the complexity inherent in its creation, only a very small number of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph watches are produced each year. Those who desire a watch which is also a masterpiece of the jewelers art, will appreciate that this timepiece is available upon request with a pave-set diamond dial, and a diamond-set bezel. DeWitt WX-1 Concept Watch
25 Oct 2011
–Press Release– WX-1: A DIFFERENT WATCH, AND FAR MORE THAN A WATCHWX-1, both a Watch Concept and an objet d’art, highlights the creativity of the House of DeWitt, which is celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2008.This exceptional creation embodies a range of cultural values merging design, futurism, sophisticated construction of its various elements, and an original interpretation of time read-off. Time and Creation, mental architecture and spatial construction are all united in a vision of tomorrow…Representing a daring wager on the future, this pure multi-dimensional concept offers an entirely new vision of what we refer to as “watchmaking”. DeWitt is consistently guided by a philosophy of doing things differently, and this principle has now given rise to WX-1. The original concept was apparently quite simple: creating a watch that was different from and indeed far more than a watch. How could one best marry authentic technological innovations and advanced aesthetics? The result of the conceptual approach had to be unprecedented, technical and highly exclusive, so as to assert itself as the embodiment of contemporary watchmaking art.Everything about WX-1 confirms that this daring bid has been successful in terms of both form and content. EMBODYING THE MULTI-CULTURAL ART OF WATCHMAKINGThe genesis of this objet d’art stems from a momentous encounter between two individuals. The object designed and developed under the name of WX-1 tells a story, that of two exceptional friends, Jérôme de Witt and Jean-Michel Wilmotte. The designer and the architect blended their curiosity and talent, uniting their thoughts in pursuing the single-minded goal of developing an object intended to measure time – but also and above all endowed with an exceptional design and truly avant-garde technology. The result is the original and ultra-exclusive WX-1, which asserts itself as a spectacular incarnation of the watchmaking art, stemming directly from the concept lab of the House of DeWitt. This exceptional futuristic creation undeniably evokes the most cutting-edge industries. Carrying references to planes, cars, speedboats and contemporary art, the overall architecture of this model makes it a totally modern and truly multicultural object. The daring formal design features are matched by an exceptional and indeed world-first mechanical construction that completely dissociates the displays from the mechanism driving them. WX-1 was intended to make a difference and to establish a new benchmark in watchmaking. Mission accomplished! ICON OF SEVERAL CONTEMPORARY WORLDSAn authentic machine representing several contemporary worlds, the pulsating heart of the WX-1 is equipped with a vertical flying tourbillon with a carriage performing one revolution per minute and visible through a cylindrical “chimney” located on the back of the case. The mechanical hand-wound movement comprises a parallel going train with five barrels ensuring a 21-day (approximately 504-hour) power reserve. The parts making up this “competitive racing” engine – barrels, gear train, tourbillon carriage, power- reserve indicator and winding device – are all arranged in vertical order. The power reserve is displayed by a coaxial roller, while the time of day is read off on two rotating discs. The first, showing the minutes, turns in a clockwise direction, while the one displaying the hours turns counter-clockwise by means of a clever gear system mounted on six runners. Very much a machine of future time, WX-1 beats to the cadence of a revolutionary mechanism featuring an unprecedented construction. Contrary to standard practice and indeed to everything introduced to date, the display of the information is disengaged from the movement driving mechanism. The going train, playing the role of propeller shaft, passes on the time measuring indications to the hour and minute discs. This complex creation is a genuine first in the history of watch engineering. It can be viewed by sliding the “hood” or “bonnet” thereby revealing the entire mechanism – the display and the movement – housed beneath its transparent covering plate. A TECHNOLOGICAL THOROUGHBREDThe performances of this technological thoroughbred also relate to the materials chosen for its construction, governed by the criteria of lightness and resistance. All the parts composing the supporting structure of the WX-1 movement – mainplate and bridges – are made from an aluminum-lithium alloy. The movement weighs no more than 27 grams in all. This ultra high-tech material is currently widely used in the aeronautical industry, particularly due to its exceptional performances. The latter match those of the movement, thereby ensuring both the lightness and the reliability of a 16.04 mm thick construction composed of 458 parts. A LIGHT CASE FOR A SOPHISTICATED OBJECTInnovative in terms of both its shape and its dimensions, the case of Incognito 2008 asserts its powerful personality, echoing the sophisticated micro-mechanical feat of engineering inside. Composed of 370 parts, its highly complex construction testifies to an entirely novel approach. Standing for much more than any straightforward conventional case, this sophisticated object comprises a large number of model components, a winding device as well as particularly elaborate sliding systems. This high-tech architectural construction combines grade 5 titanium and eloxed aluminum, both materials known for their extreme qualities and together weighing just 191 grams! One would normally expect a case of this stature to weigh around 600 grams. A CONSTRUCTION INCORPORATING A SET OF SOPHISTICATED SYSTEMSThis exceptional timepiece is equipped with two systems on the front and back of the case. The crown traditionally located on the front of the dial serves its standard time-setting function when pulled out to the first notch. On the back of the case, very much like jet engines, sit two cylindrical “chimneys”: one offers an original view of the tourbillon regulator at work, while the other houses the winding system of the WX-1. This device, which can be extracted from its recess by activating a bolt placed between the two cylindrical openings, serves to wind the watch. An electronically-driven tool specially developed for this object serves to wind the five barrels in a few dozen seconds. This extremely sophisticated high-tech instrument has a 90-minute running time when fully charged. Rotating at 60 revs per minute and featuring a torque of 10 Newton/millimeter, it is powered by a lithium battery and enables the user to wind the five Incognito 2008 barrels in just a few seconds, by means of a vertical switch. It can be recharged by a wall charger or by the USB socket on the back of the tool. The WX-1 can also be manually wound using a second tool supplied with the watch. WX-1, an authentic avant-garde creation and a unique elitist object, is a subtle alchemist’s blend of the emblematic values of the House of DeWitt merging state-of-the-art technologies entirely in line with the enduring tradition of watchmaking innovation. WX-1, which will be issued in an extremely limited series, comes with a desk stand that accentuates its multi-dimensional and multi-functional status.Shop By Replica Watches CollectionRelated articles in Fashion Watches newsGraham-London Partners With Brawn For British Grand PrixHearts on Fire-Truly a cut

Luxury watch brand Graham-London of the British Masters, has announced their partnership with the Brawn GP team, and over the weekend of the British Grand Prix will debut two limited edition watches in commemoration, with a series of 250 numbered examples for each model variant. The Brawn-Mercedes F1 cars of drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello bear Graham-London logos on their wing mirrors as they enter the preparation phase for the race on Sunday. The Graham-London Brawn Chronofighter watch features a 47mm stainless steel case and a rubber strap imprinted with the Graham signature. The bezel, chronograph reset button, and the signature Chronofighter crown lever are finished in black PVD. Presented in black or white, the dial with its two-counter chronograph indicators features the Brawn team colors, and subdial hands which evoke the needles of a car speedometer. Eight screws secure the stainless steel caseback, which has a sapphire crystal exhibition window to allow a glimpse into the self-winding mechanical movement. Transfered on the sapphire window is the Brawn GP ribbon. The Graham-London Brawn Silverstone watch is also presented in stainless steel. The 44mm case showcases a hot-forged carbon fiber bezel, and massive stalk-type chronograph pushers. Like the Chronofighter model, the black or white dials feature the color scheme of the Brawn team, highly luminous hands, and two counter chronograph displays which suggest dashboard instrumentation. The rubber strap bears the Graham logo, as well an embossed pattern suggestive of tire treads. Ross Brawn, Brawn GP team owner, expressed his enthusiasm for the relationship with Graham-London, and the watches themselves: “Our home race, the British Grand Prix, is a very special weekend for the Brawn GP team with our factory based just down the road from Silverstone. We are delighted to begin the weekend with the announcement of our partnership with Graham-London, one of the most prestigious watch brands in the world, and a brand with a strong British heritage. The two special edition Brawn GP watches created by Graham have been very thoughtfully designed to reflect the high level of technological and design consideration required in Formula One.”"I am delighted to see the start of this fantastic partnership between Graham-London and the Brawn GP team at the British Grand Prix this weekend,” said Eric Loth, Founder and CEO of The British Masters. “For Graham-London, this represents a great opportunity to share two extraordinarily advanced high technologies and an inspiring challenge for us to push our design and technical limits. Speed, racing, innovation and technology are all brought to mind from the sport of Formula One and we are delighted to launch our two new Brawn GP special edition watches, the Silverstone and the Chronofighter, designed with these values in mind.” Shop By Replica Watches CollectionRelated articles in Fashion Watches newsCOSC Certifies 1,437,209 Watch Movements In 2007DeWitt WX-1 Concept Watch

COSC Certifies 1,437,209 Watch Movements In 2007
17 Oct 2011
The Swiss offices of the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC) issued 1,437,209 chronometer certificates in 2007, with all brands and participants represented. Overall, there was a 13.6% increase compared to 2006. Rolex, Omega, and Breitling continue to represent by far the largest recipients of chronometer certificates. Rolex claimed a substantial first place standing, with 728,256 certified movements. Omega came in at second place with 341,161. Breitling obtained 222,650 certificates; of that number, 62,000 were for quartz movements. By way of comparison, Ulysse Nardin and Corum had 12,634 and 10,659 COSC-certified movements, respectively. Other brands of interest include Panerai, whose manufacture calibers are playing a larger role in its COSC stats, and TAG Heuer, whose results point to an increasing focus on watches with mechanical calibers, rather than quartz ones. Fashion house Chanel is also placing a greater emphasis on developing themselves as a “serious” luxury watch brand; it received 6,632 chronometer certificates in 2007.
