On February 12th, the official Omega Countdown Clock began ticking off the seconds, marking the final year until the start of the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010. On hand at the ceremony to address the enthusiastic spectators was Omega President Stephen Urquhart and Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek Jr., as well as International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge and John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC). Mr. Rogge praised Swiss watchmaker Omega’s distinguished role in the advancement of sports timekeeping, calling the company “a source of enormous confidence for the IOC and the organizers of the Olympic Games.” The IOC President also addressed the beauty of British Columbia and Vancouver, as well as the generosity and welcoming spirit of its citizens. VANOC Chief Executive John Furlong graciously accepted a special commemorative facsimile of the Olympic bell from Nick Hayek, Jr. Afterward, both men took a few moments to address the assembled onlookers, expressing their assurance in the excellence of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.
